The Challenge of Combining Quality With Productivity

TIG welding remains an important part of high-quality stainless steel fabrication. In the hands of an experienced welder, it can produce clean, precise, and dependable results. However, the process can become time-consuming when a project requires long seams, numerous components, or repeatable welds across a large production run.

Traditional TIG welding also introduces significant heat into the material. Controlling that heat is critical when working with stainless steel because excessive heat can contribute to warping, distortion, discoloration, and additional finishing requirements.

As a growing fabrication company, Sanitary Welding needed a solution that could increase production capacity without compromising the quality our customers expect. Handheld laser welding offered the speed, control, and repeatability required to complement our existing capabilities.

Introducing LightWELD to Our Fabrication Process

Our team selected LightWELD as an accessible way to bring laser welding into daily production. Its handheld format allowed our experienced welders to adopt the technology while maintaining direct control over the welding process.

The results became particularly clear during the fabrication of a large stainless steel storage tank. One seam required approximately 20 feet of welding. According to Sanitary Welding founder Steve Feamster, completing that seam with TIG welding would have taken around two hours. Using LightWELD, the team completed it in approximately ten minutes.

That improvement represents more than faster welding. Reducing welding time can help minimize heat input, limit distortion, improve turnaround times, and allow our team to handle larger projects more efficiently.

Expanding Our Laser Welding Capabilities

Sanitary Welding has also used LightWELD beyond conventional stainless steel applications. During the fabrication of a copper distillery, our welders developed custom settings and used copper wire to braze the components together.

The process produced excellent seams while requiring very little finishing work. This demonstrated how the technology could be adapted to specialized materials and project requirements—not simply used as a one-size-fits-all production tool.

Following the successful introduction of handheld laser welding, we expanded our capabilities by adding a laser welding cobot equipped with LightWELD technology. The system supports larger projects involving repeated components and multiple subassemblies, helping our team achieve consistent results across higher-volume fabrication work.
